Snow and Fire: A Tactical RPG
A downloadable game for Windows
This game is, at its core, an experiment on long-form map design. It is completed with four massive chapters, for a total of 8-10 hours playtime. Four different massive levels, fifteen characters, numerous fully-written talk conversations, and a unique set of choices that influence later chapters.
Hard mode is recommended for veteran players of tactical RPGs. A story and normal mode are included for less experienced players who still want to try the game. Additional difficulty options grant players unique ways to experience the game.
A zip file containing the game has been uploaded to this page. Click here to view the manual or look through and download the source code for the game.
The story follows Clint, a young mercenary setting out on his first job, and Alison, a simple trader looking to sell her wares in a nearby city. The stakes of their journey begin to escalate, and they are eventually involved in an island-wide conspiracy against the Princess.
The best analogy to quickly understand the game is chess. A player controls multiple pieces and can move each one once a turn. Once all of the player's pieces have taken an action the enemy's turn begins. The computer will attempt to kill player pieces, while the player must defeat the computer's pieces in order to reach an objective.
Each units has a variety of stats that combine to make fluid and interesting combat. A hit chance dice will be rolled to see if an attack succeeds, but each attack can be countered by an enemy, leading to a difficult tug of war where everything is a resource.
